What an amazing use of technology to spread awareness about cancer. It’s typical in professional cycling to see various messages painted on the road during the event but this takes it to a whole new level. During the 2009 Tour de France the Nike Chalkbot will chalk up to 100,000 messages on the roads throughout France. Sign up at wearyellow.com and submit your message and wait for it to be painted. At that point it take a picture record the location and notify you that it’s been done. Watch the first video to get a better idea of what chalkbot is and then watch the second video to see how it works.

Today marks the start of the Tour de France which is the premier event for professional cycling. I realize that your scratching you head to why I would be talking about this on my blog but stay with me as I shed a little light on the subject. This year the tour will have more coverage than normal due to the return of Lance Armstrong who has come out of retirement; not for personal gain but to raise awareness for the global initative that his foundation recently announced.
Cancer will be the leading cause of death, globally, in 2010. This disease affects 28 million people worldwide. Its projected growth over the next 20 years statistically dwarfs other diseases. In many parts of the world, cancer is considered a death sentence. Survivors are labeled and cruelly stigmatized. With 30 to 40 percent of all cancers being preventable, a shared global strategy that combines prevention and innovation is essential.
Below you will find the first video that NIKE and LIVESTRONG created to address Lance’s return to the sport. Over the next couple of weeks I would like to share some of the other videos with you. I have a feeling they will inspire and touch your heart, so please keep checking back. In case you can’t tell, the fight against cancer is something that I’m deeply passionate about. The Lance Armstrong Foundation has this awesome quote that says “PICK A FIGHT WITH CANCER”, I pray that more people do!
