  1. I am fully with you on The Snow Patrol front, but I am entirely biased as these guys grew up a few miles from me and they’re currently in concert in Belfast here at the minute and every concert has been sold out – in fact I think nearly every person that lives here is going!! Great musicians and all round lovely guys too! Take Back The City is an awesome track on their album too, a bit of a departure from their Chasing Cars days but I love them! Check out the Reindeer Section (a good song is You Are My Joy) as Gary Lightbody got together with some musicians and put this together a few years back and you’ll love it ;)

  2. Jeff, getting ready to use some of your music knowledge to blow through the mammothmen itunes giftcard. THX.

  3. i LOVE band of horses!!!

  4. Dude, glad you’re getting into Band of Horses. Check out their first album, it is really good as well.

  5. Love Band of Horses. Just wanted to note they are coming to the Neighborhood Theater in June. That place is about the perfect size to see bands.

Lots of great work on your site. Keep it up.

Coming Soon…

The Winner | Passion, Education, Books and Something Free

To begin with, I wanted to apologize for missing the date to announce the winner of the Passion, Education, Books and Something Free post. I’ve been traveling extensively the last week or so and I’m just now getting caught up. With that said I would like to congratulate David Bean from Nashville, TN on winning my copy of Outliers.  David,  I hope that you enjoy the book as much as I did and eventually will have the opportunity to pass it along to someone else.  I’ve already started several new books and I’m looking forward to doing this again in the near future.

Chances are you haven’t heard of  19 year old Robert Francis yet but I hadn’t either until I caught a full episode of the Carson Daily Show the other night featuring Robert and his debut album, One by One. Basically, I’m hooked! Check out the title track and another of my favorites above.

(Taken from Mark’s MySpace Page) ”Walking On Broadway,” the long awaited debut solo record from Mark Kano, the lead singer of Athenaeum, is now available! This is the first collection of new songs written by Kano since Athenaeum’s 2001 self-titled effort on Atlantic Records. The self-produced eight song disc was mixed by Gavin MacKillop (Toad The Wet Sprocket, Goo Goo Dolls, Athenaeum) and recorded at various studios throughout 2008 with the help of fellow musicians Nic Brown, Snuzz, Mike Garrigan and Sam Frazier, and features Kano’s best songs to date. “Walking On Broadway” picks up where we last left Athenaeum, a band that helped create a brand of authentic pop rock that continues to live somewhere just outside the radar of mainstream music. Instantly accessible yet sophisticated and memorable, “Walking On Broadway” promises to please fans of the alternative rock genre.

I’ve always a been a huge fan of Mark and his work and hope that you take the time to support him and his music. I’m looking forward to introducing you to Athenaeum at some point in the near future but first I’m going to let you fall in love with “Walking On Broadway”. Check out his website and buy his album here.

Passion, Education, Books and Something Free

I have a question that I ask people when I’m getting to know them. I wouldn’t consider it a difficult question but you would be surprised at the looks I often get in return.  So here it is, “What are you truly passionate about in your life”?  Instead of a quick response, it’s that awkward ”deer in headlights” expression.   In all honesty, my heart goes out to those who have yet to discover direction and purpose. Does it really matter what car you drive, the amount of money you make or the toys you own; if at the end of everyday you come home empty and unfulfilled?  Life is about the choices you make and those you choose not to make; at any point you can reinvent, refocus or reform your life. So, as I reinvent, refocus and reform my own life I’ve decided to supplement that journey with words of others through reading. I’ve always felt that education is essential to enlightenment and reading is something I don’t often do.  After several recommendations from friends I decided to start with Malcolm Gladwell’s most recent book titled, Outliers(The Story of Success). I had assumed he would explain exactly how to become an overnight success with step by step instructions.  Instead it was a wonderful mind exercise that forced me to look at my life, identify opportunties for success and ultimately capitalize on those opportunities. If you haven’t read the book, do yourself a favor and pick it up.

So now for the FREE part of this post. I feel that sharing knowledge that inspires others in some form or fashion is a beautiful gift.  So, I would like to give my copy of Outliers to one of you as a gift. Matter of fact, everytime I read a book this year I will randomanly give it away to someone that reads the blog. Hopefully you will read it and then pass it along to someone else. Here’s how it will work – leave a comment and share a book, movie, song, or quote that has somehow inspired your life. Even if you are blog shy and just want to say hello, I’ll still throw your name in the pot. Next Wednesday I will pick someone at random and send the book, no strings attached.  Let’s face it, who doesent like something for free, especially a great book? So thats it, pretty simple huh? Thank you for taking the time to check out the blog. I’m looking forward to seeing what you guys bring to the table.

  1. What inspires me is the quest to inspire others. Seriously. Whether it’s in my work or just by holding a door open for someone. When I sense that I’ve made another person have a slightly better day I feel very inspired in all sorts of ways.

As far as music goes, putting my 40 gigs of music on shuffle and hearing the most random variety of music is what gets me through a long day of photo editing.

  2. Hey Jeff, great idea. If you liked Outliers, you should check out the other Gladwell books – The Tipping Point and Blink.

  3. being a creative professional i’m constantly being inspired from all things around me day to day. anything visual from a cool package at the grocery store to the sweet warhol exhibit i recently checked out! being a designer, photographer or artist can be super stressful at times… i recently heard a quote that made me laugh, but is also very true! “stress is the fertilizer of creativity.”

  4. What a beautiful idea friend!
What inspires me continually is my amazing husband and his selfless affections for me. I am so blessed beyond this world…. Love continues to push me towards greatness. Love helps me take better photos and meet people where they are at.
much love to you friend! ~S

  5. Jeff~ your words, the way you put them down on this blog are just undescribeable. They are so moving in a way that you take a step back and look at your day so far to see if you have lived your day to the best of your ability.
There is a wonderful book out there that we received from our church and I recommend everyone read it. It is “Wild At Heart” by John Eldredge
Hope you have a wonderful day. What inspires me is God! Second to him is my family. What a wonderful experience to be a wife, bestfriend, mother, and a dog owner. Have a terrific day!!!

  6. I’ve heard that’s a great book! I think I’ll pick myself up a copy on good old half.com…

  7. Great idea Jeff, and so glad you are spreading the knowledge wealth. Keep it coming, you are so talented!

  8. irresistible revolution – shane claiborne.

i’ve been thinking about reading outliers…but at this point, it’s still a thought. :)

  9. This is really great! As for inspiration, I just got off the phone with my sister and didn’t know how or where to start back in at work, so I went to twitter, clicked on your post and now here I am… she said to me on the phone no more than 5 minutes ago… “I’m pregnant!” What a beautiful thing… new life. Who knows how the world will be impacted by this little blessing?!?!

  10. A totally random song that gets me motivated and want to get out and better my life is Piano Man. Its just something about that song that makes me feel I can do anything I put my mind to.

  11. Last week I saw the movie ‘Secret Life of Bees’ and I thought about the importance of relationships between women (mothers, daughters, sisters, best friends, etc.). I had read the book awhile ago (which I loved), but seeing it brought to film reminded me of it’s beautiful message.

  12. Love it! A friend has included in her email signature “Becoming is superior to being” and I just love this quote! It reminds me that we are always evolving, always learning and to never stop questioning everything!

  13. This is just awesome. I am in the same situation at the moment. I have put my love of photography/design/writing on the back burner in order to pay the bills. I would love to get rid of the fear of “the unknown” and just go for it. I love your blog, photography and music selections!! Very inspiring.

  14. that’s an awesome question to ask people. i love how it just gets you to truly dive into conversation & the depths of a person. great question! as far as what i’m passionate about… trying to find the beautiful out of everyday that the Lord has blessed me with. even in the crap that life can throw you, i’m passionate about finding the good in the everyday little things. the book sounds great too. not one i would have probably picked up without a recommendation, so thanks!!

  15. I like your spin on “paying it forward”. Kudos my friend, kudos.

  16. splendid post jeff – a book for everyone that will change your life: “you can heal your life” by louise hay – this should be required life reading…

  17. A well-composed song. Something where you listen maybe once or twice, and then REALLY listen to, and you can hear the singer/songwriter pouring out his/her or heart or talking about genuine happiness/sadness, etc. Getting lost in a composition and having it affect you in any way: that’s truly inspirational.

  18. I am inspired by my children! Their innocence and wild abandon to jump into anything and laugh at everything never ceases to inspire me to “not sweat the small stuff” and they help to remind me that “it is ALL small stuff!”.

  19. Jeff, what an absolutely lovely thing to do, there is nothing more beautiful than the gift of words. Such a great question to ask people when you first meet them, and I have to say the one thing I’d truly be passionate about in my life is, very simply love and witnessing it even in the smallest of ways. It confirms to me that the world is a beautiful place. I can’t resist the opportunity to tell you 3 things that have greatly inspired me. The book Tuesday’s With Morrie ~ I’m sure you have read it but if you haven’t then you really really must. It will touch your soul in ways I can’t even begin to explain. It’s a beauty. Secondly it’s a place called The Actors Church and it’s a small garden at the back of the curch in Covent Garden in London. It is filled with wooden seats and each of these seats is engraved with a message or quote in honour of a loved one – google it, it’s a truly beautfil place to be inspired in and although I have only been there once it is ingrained in my memory and I will be back there. And lastly it is the last track on the City of Angels soundtrack album and the song itself is called City of Angels and it is composed by the wonderful Gabriel Yared -you NEED to hear this song and if your heart isn’t soaring by the end of it, well then, i’ll be extrememly surprised =) But PLEASE let me know what you thought of the song when you do!

Thank you Jeff this was a lovely way to kickstart the day, i feel like I can do a million things now! All the best!

GRO is a recent addition to the daily rotation and one that I would strongly suggest you pick up sometime soon. Think pop/rock with influences from the Goo Goo Dolls, Third Eye Blind, Coldplay and Lifehouse. My guess is that you guys are going to love this band!

Brooke Fraser, a native of New Zealand is the real deal in my opinion. Her songs are beautifully crafted and from the heart. Take the title track “Albertine” for example, which is a tribute to lives lost in the Rwandan genocide. Overall an incredible album and one worth owning.
